Are rulers... descendants from Hell?
Ordinary Bahrainis are using Google Earth to spy on the palaces, yachts, former national parks and waterfront properties (90% of the country) owned by the royal family and their cronies, while the rest of the country lives in squalor...
“Some of the palaces take up more space than three or four villages nearby and block access to the sea for fishermen. People knew this already. But they never saw it. All they saw were the surrounding walls,”

Heh...I know of this first-hand. My family lived in a compound side-by-side with an old, delapidated village (don't know if it was Shi'a, and it's nothing like some danky slums in Pakistan I've seen, but comparatively to everything else around it, it was a sad sight). It was quite a lot for a 10 year old from California to wrap his head around. And I went to school with a lot of those royal kids, including the dumb one who ran away with the US Marine, only to dump him once they reached Vegas. Go figure.
In any case, your photographs and blog are incredible. I remember stopping at Male airport once in the 80's and I wanted to get off the plane so bad because the islands looked amazing from the air. Oh well. Sometime down the road. In the meantime, I'll live vicariously through your blog.
Cheers,
Omer
