Here are my thoughts:
Having a plain design is one thing but making the presentation of content confusing to the visitor is not a good idea. The plain design will work great if everything were easier to make sense. I got lost and had to spend a minute trying to figure out what was happening.
I think the main content categories need to be revised.
Also it will be a good idea to let the visitor know which bits of text are LINKS and which are not. I had to scan my mouse over the links like a blind man reading braille to figure out what is clickable.

I never questioned myself why, but I really like colour. If I can, it would be tones of great colour as a scheme. Together with it, clarity and simplicity is of utmost importance. Rules are important, like Simon’s suggestion on hyperlinks, I must remind.
As I write this, I am eagerly awaiting a theme for me.
